October Across Lake 10
Bill Tiepelman ·

Autumn from shore to sky
October Across Lake 10 gives every layer of the landscape something to do. Grasses and fallen leaves hold the near shore; the lake repeats bands of orange, yellow, red, and green; and long white clouds travel through a blue sky above the trees. A bare-limbed tree at the left keeps the foliage from becoming one uninterrupted wall of color.
A small point of life
Across the water, a small cluster of waterfowl breaks the reflections. It gives scale to the wide scene without turning the picture into a wildlife portrait. We can describe those visible birds, but the image alone cannot establish species or a documentary record of an encounter. What matters compositionally is their quiet interruption of a nearly seamless mirror.
