Each one was as skilled with the needle as a wizard with her wand, and not a day passed without a friendly (or sometimes not-so-friendly) bout of needlework one-upmanship. Then there was Betty "Backstitch" Bobbin, famed for her stitch so steady it could be used as a surgeon's guide. And last but never least, was Mildred "Magic Loop" Loomis, who could weave spells into her stitches (or so the local children believed). The latest round of their endless crafting crusade began when gnomes—yes, gnomes—became the talk of the town. Not your garden-variety gnomes, oh no, but cross-stitched depictions of these mythical creatures, each with a personality as vivid as the threads used to conjure them.
